The
instructions for extended cleaning and disinfection
is an addition to the instructions available
in the User manuals for S-Mask, S-ESA, S-PE
and S-N.
ATTENTION! Please examine the User Manual
carefully before using these instructions.
NOTE:
As cleaning solvents Interspiro supplies
“Spirorein” for cleaning, and
“Spirodec plus” & “Spiroclean”
for disinfection.
The instructions for extended cleaning and
disinfection are also available in Swedish,
German and Dutch (Acrobat PDF downloads

Exhalation valve, S-MASK
- Disconnect the breathing valve.
- S-Masks delivered after 2006-05-01:
Release the locking pin on the left
side of the mask (as worn) by first
turn the locking pin one half turn
(180º) [Picture 1] and then
by using your thumb to push the
locking pin upwards until it releases
the exhalation cover. [Picture 2]
For older masks:
It may occur that the locking pin
is not turned in to its locked position.
In such cases the locking pin can
be pushed up without first turning
it.
- For S-Masks with first breath
activation push the locking pin
on the right hand side (as worn)
upwards until it releases the exhalation
cover. [Picture 3]
- Remove the exhalation valve. For
ambient air hatch version push down
the indicator arm to release the
exhalation valve.
- Wash the exhalation valve in
lukewarm water (max. 40°C) with
a mild detergent to remove dirt.
Check that there are no remnants
of dried body fluids.
- Disinfect exhalation valve following
the instruction supplied with the
disinfectant.
- Rinse the exhalation valve carefully
with clean water.
- Let the parts dry.
- Mount the exhalation valve, beginning
at the right hand side (as worn).
For version with ambient air hatch,
the indicator arm must be pushed
down when the exhalation valve is
inserted.
- Mount the locking pin(s). Make
sure that the locking pin on the
left side (as worn) is turned so
that it will be secured in the notch
on the mask [Picture 1].
It is recommended to replace the
locking pin with the new version
of locking pin with grooved edge
(part no. 460 190 374).
- For version with ambient air
hatch, operate the hatch mechanism
several times to check the functionality.
For version with first breath activation,
check that the exhalation valve
is firmly secured to the face mask.
Exhalation valve, S-ESA,
S-PE and S-N
- Disconnect the breathing valve.
- For S-ESA only, unscrew the ESA
adapter. [Picture 4]
- Push at the locking tabs on each
side of the exhalation valve cover
to release it. [Picture 5]
- Remove the exhalation valve assembly.
[Picture 6]
- Wash the exhalation valve in
lukewarm water (max. 40°C) with
a mild detergent to remove dirt.
Check that there are no remnants
of dried body fluids.
- Disinfect exhalation valve following
the instruction supplied with the
disinfectant.
- Rinse the exhalation valve carefully
with clean water.
- Let the parts dry.
- Place the pin of the exhalation
valve assembly back in the hole
in the mask connector. [Picture
6]
- Place the outer end of the exhalation
valve spring in the circular cavity
on the inside of the exhalation
valve cover. Now move the exhalation
valve cover towards the mask and
hitch the cover onto the connector
by first inserting the upper “hook”
of the connector into the middle
hole (in the upper part) of the
valve cover. Then push the lower
part of the valve cover towards
the connector until the two locking
tabs on both sides lock into position.
[Picture 5]
- For S-ESA only, screw the ESA
adapter back in the connector. [Picture

Breathing valve
- Disconnect the breathing valve.
- Unscrew the cover of the breathing
valve and remove the positive pressure
spring. [Picture 7]
NOTE: S-N is a negative pressure
breathing valve and has therefore
no positve pressure spring.
- Unscrew the locking nut of the
breathing valve and remove the valve
insert. [Picture 8]
- Clean the cover, locking nut,
positive pressure spring and the
outside of the diaphragm and diaphragm
ring in lukewarm water (max 40°C)
and a mild detergent. Wipe the valve
housing with a cloth and lukewarm
water (max. 40°C) with a mild
detergent to remove dirt.
- Disinfect the inside of the diaphragm
and valve housing with a disinfectant.
Pour the disinfectant in the valve
housing and wobble it around [Picture
9]. Wipe the inside of the exhalation
pipe with a cloth and disinfectant.
- Rinse the cover, locking nut,
positive pressure spring and the
outside of the diaphragm and diaphragm
ring in clean water. Wipe the valve
housing with a cloth and clean water.
- Dry the parts thoroughly. If
possible, use low compressed air
to dry the inside of the valve housing
and diaphragm. Blow carefully to
not remove the diaphragm from the
housing.
ATTENTION! When cleaning the breathing
valve it must be completely dry
before it is assembled and put back
into service. Remaining water can
form ice on vital parts resulting
in malfunction of the breathing
valve.
- Push the diaphragm against the
valve housing. Mount the valve insert,
ensure that the lever is correctly
located between the diaphragm plate
and the roller and at 90° to
the roller. Screw on the locking
nut. [Picture 10 & 11]
- Place the positive pressure spring
on the diaphragm and screw on the
cover.
NOTE! S-N is a negative pressure
breathing valve and has therefore
no positve pressure spring.
ATTENTION! After the extended
cleaning and disinfection procedure
perform a function test of the mask
and breathing valve as described in
Interspiro Test Instructions.
